He studied biology at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and received his PhD in 1994. From 1994 - 1997, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Biology in Tübingen. He was an Assistant Professor (C1) at the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry at the University Saarbrücken from 1998 - 2004 and finished his habilitation in 2003 by a thesis on the "Evolutive design of Drugs and biocatalysts by bacterial surface display", followed by the appointment as a "Privatdozent". In 2004, he accepted an offer of the Heinrich-Heine-University Düesseldorf for an Associate Professorship (C3) in Bioanalytics at The Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry where he was appointed director of the institute in 2008. In 2010, he accepted an offer of the Westfälische Wilhelms-University for a full Professorship (W3).
